Sophie Lanigan, a 12-year-old girl from Dublin, Ireland, has become an inspiration to many after smiling bravely despite losing all four of her limbs to a Strep A infection. Her story has touched the hearts of many, and her positive outlook on life despite the challenges she faces is truly remarkable.
The Journey of Sophie Lanigan
In December 2022, Sophie was taken to the doctor because she had a high temperature and was having difficulty breathing. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. Her doctors later diagnosed her with sepsis caused by Strep A, and her family prepared for the worst.
Despite the odds stacked against her, Sophie fought for her life for two weeks while on a stronger ventilator in another hospital. She was finally taken off the ventilator on Christmas Day, but the news was devastating – the disease had caused irreversible damage to her hands and feet, necessitating quadruple amputations.
Facing a Difficult Childhood
Sophie is now facing a very difficult childhood alongside her parents, Keith Lanigan and Laura Hughes. However, her family and friends have been amazed by her resilience and positive attitude despite the challenges she faces. New pictures shared by her aunt Christina Canavan show that Sophie is “still smiling.”
The Journey to Recovery
Sophie is currently waiting on a bed at The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, where the objective is to make her as mobile as possible so she can be at home. Her house will also need to be renovated to make it accessible for her.
The Response of the Public
Sophie’s story has touched the hearts of many, and a go-fund-me page set up for her has raised over €132,000. The page describes Sophie as the most astonishing, solid, and determined young girl who fought through the infection. The public’s response has been amazing, and her family is incredibly grateful for the support.
